Cancelled surgeries due to limited space at recovery ward not because of 'dumsor' – KBTH

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has refuted claims that scheduled surgeries for Monday, April 29, 2024, were cancelled due to a power outage popularly known as ‘dumsor.'

In a statement correcting what it referred to as “misleading” reports in sections of the media that surgeries were cancelled as a result of ‘dumsor' and the standby generator was not in use, the KBTH hospital clarified the incident.

According to the hospital, work has commenced on all elective cases in their operating theaters, and the surgeries are progressing as scheduled.

The hospital explained that it experienced a low voltage for about 45 minutes.

“In the face of the low current that emanated from a problem with one of the substations of ECG, our functional standby generators came on stream and provided power for work to continue until the problem was resolved,” the statement noted.

It further explained that "Two cases at the Department of Surgery were returned to the ward at the end of the day on account of limited space at the recovery ward, not because of a power outage, while the rest of the theatres spread across the hospital and carried out their surgeries as scheduled."

The hospital assured patients and the general public that it prioritizes their care and will continue to work to provide excellent services to address their health needs.

It also urged the media to be circumspect in publishing unverified stories as they undermine public confidence and cause unnecessary fear and discomfort among patients.
