We will not allow SSNIT to play 'chaskele' with our pension funds - CLOGSAG warns

The head of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), Dr. Isaac Bampoe Addo, has issued a stern warning to the government regarding the handling of pension funds.

According to him, pension funds are not government property but rather the pensions of hardworking citizens; thus, they should not be tampered with by anyone.

Addressing the media on May 20, 2024, Dr. Addo cited Act 766, which provides investment guidelines for these funds.

Dr. Addo claimed that the government has not adhered to these guidelines and cautioned that any attempt by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to misuse the pension funds would be unacceptable.

"We want the government to know that these funds are not government funds. These funds are pension funds, and pensions are guarded by Act 766. We have investment guidelines under Act 766, and clearly, these guidelines have not been followed," he said.

He likened such mismanagement to playing "Chaskele," a local Ghanaian game, with the livelihood of retirees.

Dr. Addo warned that should the government proceed with such actions, CLOGSAG is prepared to initiate a significant strike action to protect the pensions of its members.

"Clearly, these guidelines have not been followed. The government should be aware that we will not allow SSNIT to play 'Chaskele' with our pension funds. Should they dare to go ahead, it will be the mother of all strikes in Ghana," he said.
