A senior political science lecturer at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Kwasi Amakye Boateng, has asserted that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has lost its grip on its stronghold, the Ashanti Region.

According to him, there is a feeling of disappointment in the region because no substantial development has been seen there in the 8 years of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led NPP government.

"What has this government done for the Ashanti Region in the past 8 years after borrowing so much and bringing a lot of money into the country? There is this feeling here in the Ashanti Region.

"It is true that for some time now, the government has started doing a lot of work in the region, especially the construction of roads, trying to complete the construction of medical facilities; they have started. They are doing this swiftly, but the question is to what effect?" he said.

Dr. Amakye Boateng, however, noted that the only thing that can help the NPP in the Ashanti Region is if it picks its vice-presidential candidate from the region.

"If the running mate is picked from the Ashanti Region, it would stimulate the party’s faithful here, and at least they would get the understanding that they are still being taken seriously in the NPP," he said.

The political scientist also made the point that one of the factors going against the NPP is the shift in focus of the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, from the economy to digitalisation.

"All of Dr. Bawumia’s credentials are in economic management, and people believed that he is shifting himself from the country’s economic management to digitalisation.

"This is not helping Dr. Bawumia, and it is running down his credibility," he said.
