Captain Mahama’s murder: I trust Akufo-Addo to deliver justice - Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence in President Nana Akufo-Addo and the various security agencies in the country to deliver justice in a case of murder against his nephew, Captain Maxwell Mahama. According to the former president, the mob action that led to the death of his nephew ought not go unpunished.

He says he trusts that the Akufo-Addo-led administration will undoubtedly do everything in its power to obtain justice for Captain Maxwell Mahama who was lynched by a mob at Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region.

“I believe that government and the security agencies will do everything possible to bring the perpetrators of this dastardly act to book if we are able to find out who did it and properly prosecute them and apply the penalty,” he opined during a visit to the family of the Late Capt. Mahama on Thursday.

This, the former president believes, will serve as a deterrent to people who engage in mob justice.

According to the former President, if perpetrators of the heinous crime are not dealt with in accordance with law, Ghana will become a society for criminals and impunity.

“If these perpetrators are allowed to get away with it, then the impunity will continue," the former president said.

He pleaded with Ghanaians to consider the sensitive nature of the issue and the impact on the lives of the late Captain Mahama's wife and children who continue to grieve.


Expressing “deepest regret” for the loss, Mr. Mahama entreated all to respect the role security personnel play in the safety of all Ghanaians adding that “the military is an institution that sacrifices a lot to defend, and for those who are to defend us to become the victims, for us to inflict this kind of death on them is unacceptable.”

“This is a tragedy that nobody expects at a time like this. Maxwell was a very fine officer, very respected in the army and he had a very bright carrier ahead of him and unfortunately to die this way is totally unacceptable,” he said.



The Former President, who at the time of the incident was preparing to return from India said, it has never been the culture Ghanaians to end lives this way and stressed that rigorous measures should be taken to erase this act from the society.

“It has never been our culture to kill humans in this way and I believe that everything should be done to stamp it out, if even the person is an armed robber he does not deserve to die like this hand him over to the law and let the law deal with him,” he said.

He asked Ghanaians to maintain discipline and avoid relating the unfortunate incidence to politics.

“We need to behave in a manner that is disciplined. That allows our country to be able to make the progress that we all want to make. I also appeal that we don’t politicize this matter. It could have been anybody and the fact is the reality is here with us and so let us together in a non-partisan manner, government, opposition, everybody take this as a national tragedy and treat it the way that it should be treated,” the former President averred.

The family thanked former President Mahama for his consolation and called for immediate action against the circulation of videos and pictures relating to the killing of their son on social media.

The president was accompanied by Former Minister of Finance, Prof. Kwesi Botchwey and former Defense Minister, Benjamin Bewa-Nyog Kunbuor and a host of others.
