Misapplication of skills is one of the factors contributing to the high rate of unemployment in the country, former Deputy Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Hon. Baba Jamal Mohammed has revealed.

“Before graduates come out, they have a fixed mentality on certain jobs they want to do even if they do not fit to be there”, he stated in an interview with Ultimate FM’s morning show host, Lantam Panpako.

“You go to study carpentry and the next day you want to become a bank manager …you learn chemical engineering and you want to do different thing now. Graduates must stick to what they learnt at school”, he admonished fresh graduates to change from it.

“In our education sector Accra is chocked with teachers meanwhile in the typical villages we do not have teachers there but everybody wants to be in Accra because it is the national capital”, he observed

According to the former National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region, there are more jobs out there especially the private sector urging graduates to adjust themselves and go after these jobs rather than focus on only white collar jobs.

“Government cannot solve all the graduate unemployment now but I am sure we can reduce it drastically if we adjust ourselves into private sector” he pointed out.

He also took swipe at the ‘get rich fast’ mentality of young graduates urging them to desist from illegal means of getting monies.

“They graduate from school today but want to ride in Mercedes Benz today. They start work today and want to be seen as financial gurus today” he bemoaned.
