David Oscar calls on the media to promote Ghanaian comedians

Ghanaian actor and comedian, David Oscar has called on Ghanaians especially the media to use their platforms to support and promote Ghanaian comedy.

The comedian, who has gradually carved a niche for himself as one of Ghana’s foremost and exciting stage humorists in an interview with Abrantepa on Radio Univers last Saturday said, Ghanaian comedy is gradually growing and it needs people who have witnessed any of the comedy shows held in the country to be ambassadors and help in its promotion.

“If somebody sit on some platform and say Ghanaian comedians are ‘wack’ and you have a platform to defend us and you don’t face that particular person or you don’t put some sense into that person’s head because you have seen what you have seen and you believe that this thing exists and it can happen, then you are not doing us any favour or any good.”

“At the end of the day, the bigger job rests on people who have seen what we can do and the efforts we put in our shows to use their platforms as a mouthpiece to also champion a course for what we are doing in this country” David Oscar stated.

He disclosed that with the introduction of comedians like DKB, James Brown, Khemicals, Augustine, Dennis and other humorists who have joined Foster and himself who were the only well established comedians years ago shows how fast the comedy market is growing. He added that Ghana doesn’t have a comedy industry yet but a market and hopes “in about five years from now, the story about Ghana’s comedy will change”.

According to the brand ambassador for Castle Milk Stout, criticisms about Ghanaian comedians and their stage performances are warmly welcomed for them to learn from their past mistakes and improve on their performances but not from people who have not been to any of their shows to witness their performances.

“However when those types of criticisms come from certain quarters and people who have no idea of what you do or what you have accomplished, then you realize that those criticisms are coming from hollow or shallow sources”

He mentioned influencing and changing the perceptions of people about Ghanaian comedy as some of the major challenges Ghanaian comedians are facing presently.

“Influencing and changing the perceptions of people have been a major challenge. If everybody says you are not funny and people are not giving you the chance to strike yourself, then how do you work to be able to influence that?”

David Oscar concluded that they don’t presume to be perfect but “whoever presumes to know so much and insult us don’t know more than the managers of the television stations who have been broadcasting our Corporate Comedy Series shows. If what we sent to them were shits, they wouldn’t have put it on their airwaves but they did, so that should tell you we are doing something right”.

Zionfelix.com is reliably informed that the Corporate Comedy Series train rolls into Cape Coast this Easter Friday, April 18.
