this article brought ou two prominent things:
the man who instituted the SWAG awards was so resourcesful that he could provide the cash awards as well. that was the calibre of person who was the team manager of the blackstars in 1978 when we won the 11 afcon tournament. with such a man as team manager why would the players not be disciplined and tame their egos? now this GFA has cheapened the position of a team manager such that they could appoint an ex player team manager who never ever played for the blackstars.
in 1982 COACH CK GYAMFI was the team manager.
secondly this article tells us that in 1978 dan owusu was declared footballer of the year a year in which he emerged as goal king. this alos tells me that a player who emerges as a goal king, can also be awarded footballer of the year. unfortunately since 1999, the heavily kotoko dominated SWAG have ensured that anytime a hearts player has performed creditably and has also emerged as the top scorer, they conviniently misconstrue the goal king as an award by SWAG, and deny thee hearts player of the award. example ishmael addo, don bortey. they will look somewhere and throw the footballer of the year award to. even where a hearts darling has done everything to merit footballer of the year award, and they could not find any other player conviniently outside hearts to give the award to, but to lok within hearts, they would look for another player second feedle to the hearts darling and give the award to him. example in 1978, adolf armah was listed amongst the best eleven in africa. in 1979 he was voted 2nd only to thomas nkono. but in ghana SWAG CLOSED ITS EYES on all these and gave the SWAG footballer of the year award to John Yawson. This is not to say John Yawson was not a cracking player. he was but he was conviniently chosen to deny adolf armah a hearts darling, of the award because John joined hearts barely a year.
in similar vain in 2000, it was traversity of justice to deny ishamael addo of the award in giving it to emmanuel osei kuffour. ishamael equalled dan owusu's 3 time goal king award, emerged as the top scorer at the world under 17 championship. he being a hearts darling, he was side-stepped and the award given to emmanuel osei kuffour.
then again in 2002, don bortey in my estimation deserved the award but the kotoko dominated SWAG in their quest to pay bortey back conviniently landed on charles taylor and the following everything was done to lure him to kotoko.
then the most disgusting of them alll was in 2003 when again don bortey was denied the award and the award given to aziz ansah. there was so much controversy. and in justifying that decision i heard the SWAG president saying that in the meeting that the took that decision he was infromed that aziz ansa as a defender has scored so many goals. the question i asked is in his estimation which player impressed him most before going into that meeting?
i don't want to belive that this year because mahatma has emerged as top scorer, SWAG will conviniently misconstrue that as their award to him and deny him the footballer of the year award.

This Award should mainly go Local players who are the ones that really deserve(THIS AWARD). I don't agree why professional player are being recognize with this award. They don't deserve it a bit. We need to encourage local sportsmen who really toil to make the domestic league exciting and keeps it going. Stop patronizing pro soccer players they don't deserve this award. If the represent the national team and you want to recognize them then it needs to be some award relating to their representing the national team in that order but you can't award them player of the year award that's meant for the LOCAL/DOMESTIC athletes.
