Friendly or not is not every month you come into a Japan friendly. Plus getting these players in one swoop is not always easy feat. This what is called killing two birds with one stone, and yes we can kill both birds. Where is your confidence. There are 23 players here and two matches what is the big deal. Do you want to see ready to play stars journey down to Accra only to warm the bench and return to Europe? You know they are not all going to feature in both matches. Where is your thinking cup? Stop creating confusion that will work negatively towards the campaign rather. You your self say $250,000 is chop change and do you think the GFA is broke and dying to fill its coffers? Mr. Civility I think you are the one who needs to put his thinking cup on. The writer is talking about better preparation and being battle ready for the world cup qualifying. Who cares about players who will warm the bench and will return to Europe without play time? That is a given and the players themselves know it. GFA is being narrow minded and short-changing the future of our Black Stars for short term gains. Are you not worried that not much thought went into this contract with the Japanese? That the GFA is happy to sign such a stupid contract shows the quality of the leaders we have.

My suggestion is, we should concentrate on these Zambians, massacre them, then go to Japan with the same players but play "saka saka", lose the match, and collect our money. I lie?
The multi-million dollar question is, will the Ghanaian be sincere enough to concentrate only on the Zambian game when 250,000 is smelling somewhere?
Yamus 10 years ago
The issue is not about money; it is sacrificing those 2 crucial days which the players need to prepare for the Zambia match. Ghana needs those 2 days more than Zambia since majority of our players play overseas.

I believe some GFA officials love the travel abroad. That is how they make their extra, extra, you know what, pocket filled. It's their pocket first remember? Ghanaian Officials always consider their personal interest first. It's always about how they can pocket some dollars. This is killing our progress as a nation.

While I was taken aback initially with GFA decision to play the Zambia game on September 6, I believe in a way its the right strategy. I realize this must be inconvenient for most working fans in overseas including myself. However, we should look beyond the Japan friendly and analyze other aspects of this decision. Zambia for the most part has been playing all sorts of mind games to get advantage of this game. This is our home turf..as such we should dictate where and when the game should be played provided its approved by FIFA. I disagree that the players will not have enough time due to their playing time with their respective clubs in Europe. By FIFA's rules these players are to be available to their respective national teams minimum of ten days before international engagement. Folks this decision is partly monetary and MIND GAMES.

What are you talking about? Do you think the current call ups and selection can do the job? Look at how terribly we played in South Africa at AFCON 2013? Ghana has never played such subpar, poor football in our history. There was nothing about Ghana style of play in that team. The Coach chose to call up Team C, leaving out some and majority of our best players. Why did he refuse to call Jordan who had been voted Player of the Month twice prior to the call ups and playing in top flight European league and competitions? How can Coach Appiah justify calling Solomon Asante, Adomah, Agyemang Badu,Clottey and the likes over Opare, Quincy Abeyie, Dede, Jordan, Warris, John Mensah? He is simply an inept Coach and sometimes I agonize that a true blooded Katakyie, an alumnus of a School that in the late 50s and early 60s wrote the book on Ghana Intercollegiate Soccer, could be so clueless (By the way for those who are so young and unaware of Interco Soccer in those days, The BLUE JEWELS of Opoku Ware School were consistently a finalist and played in some of the epic Final battles at the Accra Sports Stadium for the President's Gold Cup). The sad commentary is when he himself had been a first class master defender at left back.

Sir O. B-G,
To call this coach inept is to hide your head in the sand. Yes, we all agree he is not a great tactician but we have had great tacticians as Black Stars coaches before. They deliver stylish play for a short while by repeated using the same players over and over again. When performance starts to wane, they leave for green pastures. Coach Appiah's strengths are about developing and managing a team with many replaceable players. His tools are discipline and motivation. Big names who are not motivated get dropped in favour of willing players. That is how great teams are built; discipline and competitiveness before style. If we let Appiah continue his work, his teams will get better and better and Ghana football will rise to new heights. Our football will not be pretty but we will become increasingly more difficult to beat, even against the best in the world.

What? A national team nursing players? Wow! Please if you agree that he is not a tactician, then he does not need to be a national coach period. A national team must assemble all its best. Then, with a world class tactician coach, access opposing team’s style of play, deciding the best already developed players he has to face a specific opposing team. I am still waiting for the day that Essien, Kevin, Dede, Asamoah Gyan, Kwadwo Asmoah and possibly Inkoom at the right back with Munteri on the bench eager to replace one of them. These guys can even let Spain to panic. We have talents. All we need is a great coach who can use those talents in a perfect constructive manner. I do like Kwasi Appiah and I wish him all the best but he is not what Black stars need for the World Cup . At the same time, because we may not be able to afford the cost of a world class coach, we have no choice than to support him.

I also look forward to the day when our great players are all part of the team. They will be made to fight for their position by other players who have gotten a chance to play under Appiah. We need a team that is three players deep at EVERY position if we want to win a major competition. Appiah is the man for the job. He has the strategy to get us there. Forget this nonsensical idea of bringing in a new tactician every other year.

You are talking about how the coach can prepare the boys. The writer is saying the same, suggesting that we should capitalise on the little time available to us to prepare properly for the all important world cup qualifiers, and not use the short time we have to engage the players in friendlies that are not necessary at this time. The writer thinks and I agree with him, that we should concentrate all our resources and energy and time on qualifying for the world cup, and all other things can be taken care of later. We do not need divided attention at this time.

Trading a "mansion" with a "mud-house?" Where is the sense in this deal? Are there really intelligent people working at GFA? Wait until, we lose this match against Zambia...then it would have been clear this type of silent corruption is real!
The author of this piece is right. This deal raises concerns about what GFA takes into consideration for preparations for matches. Is the consideration monetary? or is it for honor and integrity for Ghana?
Why should a paltry sum of $125,000. derail our world cup plans? Given the intense preparation that Zambia will give to this match, the Japan match should not even be in contemplation at all...no way!
Football is football, and there is no more soccer minnows. If GFA is basking in some kind of complacency that Zambia is a foregone conclusion, they better abrogate the Japanese deal immediately. The boys need 100% psychological fitness to face these Zambians who know nothing other than fighting to the end. They come to Kumasi as wounded lions and will fight to the last pinch of their blood to get the points. If this was not scary in football, what else is? And yet GFA is cajoling with this menace...Wait until the loss, God forbids, but if that happens, no one at GFA WILL BE SPARED!

Excellent article, Chris. GFA is taking the Zambia game for granted. I was disappointed to read that the GFA, in trying to justify the Japan friendly, claimed that the friendly would serve as a warm up game before the playoffs. I believe the GFA, Coach Appiah and the Black Star players know that beating Zambia and qualifying for Brazil 2014 is more important than anything else. That is why thinking that Zambia cannot shock us is not prudent. Zambia is no match for a well prepared Ghana but if we don't prepare well and they prepare well, they may shock us.Even Burundi has ever eliminated us in a world cup qualifier before. It wisdom to know that, everything is possible.
As the European leagues will resume before September 2013, it means that the players will be released only after Saturday or Sunday or Monday (ie 31st August or 1st, 2nd September 2013). Playing such a crucial match in Kumasi on Friday 6th September 2013 will not allow our players enough time to assemble and prepare before the match. To play the match on Sunday 8th September is a better option.
Comparatively, the match with Japan is of no importance at all - winning it or losing it means nothing. We can afford to play it even two day after the Zambia match.
The fact is, if Ghana is knocked out by Zambia everything will go awry and there will be no interest or motivation at all to play Japan. But if we beat Zambia and qualify, the morale and motivation will be there to play Japan even two days after playing Zambia.
So the GFA should ponder over the free advice in this article and let the Zambia match remain on Sunday 8th September 2013. The Japan match need not be cancelled anyway.

We all wish the Black Stars luck in their upcoming match against the Zambians, but one thing GFA, has to know is that "luck" is for those who work hard for it, of course this friendly match would be played some days after the Black Stars crucial matc against Zambia, but the players attention shouildn't be divivded in any way, if the GFA officials can send a "duplicate' team of the Black Stars to Japan then so be it, but the same players who would have played the qualification match against Zambia on friday shouldn't be put at risk, why because most if not all of the players need tp gp back and play for their respetive foreign clubs.
And if I may ask, why is the match being played on friday, the excuse being given by GFA, is senseless and rubish, when did it become a fact of reality that Black Stars have and will always be victorious when or if they play crucial qualification match or matches in Kumasi on Friday instead of Sunday, somebody should tell the GFA, not to be naive or superstitious.
I'll edge the Ghana football authorithy to come out and cool off tempers by accepting the fact that Ghanaians have come a long way when it comes to matters concerning football, had I known is always the architectural master of fools. Thank you

GHANA has ENOUGH players to play Zambia and Japan the SAME DAY. You just want to Start what you can't finish. You are behaving like the INFORMER NEWS PAPER. This is TIMID.
You my friend, is an idiot. I just cannot be bothered to explain to you why you are an idiot, because i will be wasting my words on an idiot.
To whom is your comment directed? You are not clear.
Will the Japanese allow us to send the local BS? That's a critical question, having spent all that amount of money (I mean 250,000 on us)?
My suggestion is, we should concentrate on these Zambians, massacre them, then go t ...

The issue is not about money; it is sacrificing those 2 crucial days which the players need to prepare for the Zambia match. Ghana needs those 2 days more than Zambia since majority of our players play overseas.
Honest fact is that playing the Zambians match on Friday does not make our sense. But since we are committed, we could and should send Prince B. the Ayews, Asante Solomon, and players who are otherwise the second or reserve ...

With the way the Honorable John Mahama is working to get all the players to commit to the national team, if things didn't go as the country wanted, I wouldn't be surprise to see the names mentioned by A Richard out of office. ...

While I was taken aback initially with GFA decision to play the Zambia game on September 6, I believe in a way its the right strategy. I realize this must be inconvenient for most working fans in overseas including myself. Ho ...

can you please mention a few names of your so called world class coaches who can lead the Black stars to a touney win? Note; since 1982, these so called import coaches have not won even a silver spoon for us!

This is simple, we play the important match first against Zambia, since we have had ample time to prepare, then 4 days time we play Japan in a friendly,we should wake up,there is nothing to argue about.
Trust me they are in disagreement because most of them will be at work and cannot get the chance to watch the game. That is all what are at odds. If you have 4 days to prepare for the next game, what is a big deal about it?
Please, please GFA, play Zambia on Sunday and send another blend of players for the Japan match. After all you can make more than two teams from the pool of talented players at your disposal.
I don't see any big deal about the two games, though Zambia is very important, but Mr. Ibrahim Sani has explained everything details for a good thinking human being to understand very simple. Then why all this long grammar fr ...
