GOC expels Nartey…but he denies claim

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), has said, it has expelled Ghanaian Judoka Emmanuel Nartey from the Commonwealth Games Village for acts of indiscipline.

Nartey, however denied the claim that he was expelled from the camp, when he spoke to the GNA Sports, adding that he rather left on Monday morning to Russia to prepare for the World Championship.

He indicated that, there was an attempt to expel him from camp on Sunday, after he questioned mode of payment of allowances for athletes, which he said was in a hand written form, instead of being printed.

A statement from the Public Relations outfit of the GOC said, Nartey’s accreditation for the Commonwealth Games has also been withdrawn after showing gross disrespect to Ghanaian officials after he was paid his allowances.

Nartey, who is a serving officer in the British Army, accosted Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Vincent Oppong Asamoah, about payment for expenses he insisted he had incurred, but for which he had not yet presented receipts. The statement noted.

According to the statement, Nartey reacted disrespectfully when GOC officials asked him to channel the request through the Judo Federation officials, with the appropriate supporting documents.

It said, the Ghanaian started casting aspersions, calling the officials derogatory names while suggesting the amount to be paid him was very little compared to expenses that other athletes had been reimbursed for.

It added that despite pleas from his colleague judokas and coaches to withdraw his earlier statements and apologised, he failed to apologise to the Deputy Minister and GOC officials for his insulting behavior.

Meanwhile, Nartey who spoke to the GNA Sports, before he left camp, denied the charges and added that, officials of the GOC did not take lightly his postings on Facebook, which saw sought to question the refusal of officials to reimburse him on expenses made on pre-tournament preparations.

According to Nartey, he was only demanding for the right thing to be done and wondered why they took offence.

The athlete said, he did not leave camp on the instructions of the GOC, but had to travel to Russia to prepare for the World Championship.
