Arkutu is champion of 2012 Ostec Ghana Seniors’ Open golf

David Arkutu ruled the Ghana Seniors’ Open golf tournament again as the 2012 edition teed off to a great success over the weekend on the beautiful green courses of the Bok Nam Kim Golf Club in Accra with Ghana’s richest man, Sir Sam Jonah as well as the Okyehene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori-Panin there to compete as well as to interact. To spice up a wonderfully organized event, first time sponsors, Ostec were at their generous best. Ghana’s leading IT infrastructure company dished out prizes in avalanches so much they gave out a total of 21 trophies to winners in various categories.

“I look forward to my company supporting golf in Ghana in the years to come. We look forward to supporting this competition next year and the years beyond. Hopefully with the collaboration of you all,” said Jonathan Tawiah, CEO of Ostec in his closing remarks.

He shed a light on his company: “Golf is a game of integrity, honesty, a great way to build relationships and have fun. This fits well with our culture at Ostec, we are the leading name in IT Service in Ghana. We deliver exceptional service to our clients not just in Ghana, but West Africa. We are doing business but we are quiet because we want to let our work do the talking for us.”

Lt. Col. Larry Gbevlo-Lartey (Rtd), captain of the Bok Nam Kim Golf Club, welcomed the Ghana Golf Association (GAA) and all to the tournament.

He also expressed appreciation to the sponsors and prayed that networking and promotion of business and friendship will be realized. “We appreciate the GGA’s consideration of moving the Seniors Open to the 9 hole courses nationwide to encourage growing the game and helping smaller courses to develop their facilities. We look forward to our fruitful cooperation into the future,” Lt. Col. Gbevlo-Lartey said in a goodwill message.

The Bok Nam Kim Captain, also National Security chief added: “We appreciate the nominal funds from the GGA and the sponsor, Ostec to who we also like to extend appreciation for supporting a game with attributes similar to the ideals of their core business – networking enterprises to facilitate success.”

In the event, prizes were up for grasp for the top 5 in the main division, Men Scratch for 55 years and above players in group A which Arkutu won after grossing 153 playing over two days. Alex Fiagomeh agonizingly took second spot finishing just a stroke behind on 154 gross whereas Joe Danso was a distant 3rd after returning 163 gross. S.D Odame grossed 164 and GGA President, Dr. Felix Frempong got 166 gross to finish 4th and 5th respectively. There were three prizes for winners in the ladies Scratch of same Group A. Beatrice Vetsch Bempong of Achimota followed her recent success including winning at the Ghana and Accra Opens, with victory after shooting 165 gross to beat Esther Amedzro who grossed 166 with 3rd place going to Margaret Ivy Oppong of Kumasi on 172 gross.

Men’s handicap was won by Eric Asare who grossed 132 to 138 gross of second placed Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, the Okyehene whilst Esther Antwi finished ahead of Suzzie Abaloo Kumassah in the ladies’ category. Group B comprised 50-54 players playing 36 holes over two days which saw E.T. Mensah beating E. Nutsugah into 2nd spot to win the Men’s Scratch as B.T. Kodjo completed the top three prizes given out by Ostec.

In Group C featuring players 65 years and above, K.K. Pumpuni beat Mike Ezah with evergreen Florence Etwi-Barimah carrying home the ladies’ trophy.

Anne-Beverly Brown grossed 177 and received a special prize, also a trophy for her efforts.
