Minister targets Axim for tourist development

Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Catherine Abelema Afeku, has indicated that Axim has many potential tourism sites which can be developed to generate substantial revenue for the state.

She noted that her outfit was poised to take some pragmatic steps to harness the area’s tourism potential via various promotional and development programmes.

The Minister said Axim has great tourism potential which is largely untapped.

She mentioned the sites with enormous tourism potential as the Bebo Ayizi Island, Fort St Anthony built by the Portuguese in about 1515 and the serene beaches, among others.

According to the minister, the tourism sites would make Axim a major tourist destination in the country.

She disclosed this when she visited the Bebo Ayizi Island in Axim in the Western Region as part of her four-day working visit to the region.

She was accompanied by the deputy tourism minister, Dr Ziblim Iddi.

The minister noted that plans were afoot to develop the island into a tourist destination to attract millions of tourists in Ghana and beyond.

She pointed out that architects, who accompanied her on the tour, would ascertain how best the island could be developed, adding “hotels and other facilities could be put here to attract tourists.”

She also indicated that her ministry had produced some promotional materials, which display the country’s tourist destinations as part of efforts to boost patronage by prospective tourists.

She pointed out that her ministry would soon initiate a training programme in collaboration with an investor from Switzerland to equip workers in the industry with the needed skills to operate effectively.
