Tema to get polytechnic

The Chief Executive of the Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA), Samuel Evans Ashong Narh, has announced plans for the establishment of a polytechnic in the Tema municipality.

The Municipal Chief Executive, who said this in an answer to a question on the lack of tertiary education in the municipality at the People?s Assembly in Tema yesterday, explained that the municipality is considering either converting the Tema Technical Institute into a polytechnic or building a new structure at Tema Manhean.

The assembly was introduced by the government last year to give the ordinary people the chance to ask the President and his team of ministers questions on issues relating to the development of the country. This year?s People?s Assembly was organised as part of the activities to mark a decade of the Fourth Republic which also marks the second anniversary of Positive Change of the NPP government.

The theme for the celebration is ?Consolidating Ghana's Democracy through Peace, Unity and Development?.

Ashong Narh said the establishment of the polytechnic will also help address the increasing spate of students who do not gain admission into tertiary institutions.

On education, he said, 90 teacher trainees are being sponsored to pursue a 3 year training programme in the teacher training colleges who on completion would return to teach in the municipality while 64 brilliant students are being sponsored to pursue the SSS programme.

He mentioned the rehabilitation of the Tema Manhean School complex, cladding works of Oyibi primary and the construction of a 6-classroom block each for the Tema Secondary and the Zenu at Ashaiman as some of the measures to improve education. He said in the area of waste management in the municipality, a new system known as the franchise system of waste collection has been adopted.

Under the system, he explained that the municipality has been zoned into seven areas and contracts have been awarded to contractors who will be paid in the areas where they collect the refuse.

He said in addition, TMA has also acquired 15 new refuse containers which have been placed at vantage points in some areas in the municipality. On health, Ashong Narh said the TMA has installed a generator at the Tema General Hospital while medical equipment worth ?200m were supplied to equip the new male ward of the hospital.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Sheikh I.C Quaye, said within the road sector, many projects under the highways, urban and feeder roads sub sectors are being undertaken and some are at the various implementation stages in the region.

He mentioned the Circle to Achimota road, Mallam to Kasoa and the Tema Aflao road among others, adding that, ?the construction of the roads falls in line with the government?s policy to improve the general road network in the country.? The regional minister also highlighted some of the achievements made in other sectors of the economy such as transport, security and agriculture.

Present at the function were the deputy ministers of Local Government and Rural Development, Capt. Nkrabea Effah-Dartey (rtd), Works and Housing, Ms Theresa Tagoe, Finance, Adombilla Agambilla, Minister of Agriculture in-chare of Fisheries, Ishmael Ashitey, the mayor of Accra, Solomon Ofei Darko, among others.
