Twenty-three teams in three categories will go into a ballot tomorrow for their respective pairings as the maiden two-day Bajfreight Hockey Gala pushes off on Friday at the National Hockey Stadium.
The balloting coincides with the Annual General Meeting of the Greater Accra Hockey Association (GAHA) at which members and club representatives would be expected to make an input and agree on modalities for the gala, as well as the league scheduled for next week.
Although prizes are yet to be agreed on, hockey clubs would, for the first time, receive prize money just as outstanding players at an awards gala night which follows the coronation on Saturday to be graced by Joe Biney, Chief Executive of the sponsors, Bajfreight and Logistics.
The Tema-based freight forwarding company is reviving the hockey gala after a three years’ absence to the tune of GH¢20,000, the biggest ever sponsorship package for the gala.
According to GAHA, all the preliminary matches would be played on Friday and the semi-final and final matches played on Saturday.
SAPHOLDA, Trustees, CEPS and La, league champions in the seniors, men, women, and juniors respectively are leading the pack in what is expected to be tough encounters.
But it would not be a straight battle for these favourites because previous champions such as Golden Sticks, Exchequers and CEPS (men), including Extinguishers of Ghana Fire Service and Reformers of Ghana Prisons Service would mount a strong challenge for the ultimate prize.
There could also be surprises in the seniors and the juniors competitions as well where Citizens International, Multistix, as well as Tema Manhean look very strong.
