Drivers cautioned against road accidents

Mr Kwasi Tsibu Yirenkyi, the Eastern Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), has cautioned motorists to eschew all tendencies that are likely to cause road accidents during the Christmas and New Year festivities.

He said it is unfortunate that it had become a norm in Ghana that at every Christmas and New Year season more road crashes occur with fatalities across the country and urged motorists, especially commercial drivers to exercise restraint on the roads.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency(GNA) in a telephone interview on Thursday at Koforidua, Mr Tsibu -Yirenkyi said it was unfortunate that in spite of all the numerous road safety campaigns and education across the country road accidents which could be avoided keep occurring. He said one major gift that drivers could offer Ghanaians this festive season is to ensure accident free season in order to reduce the trauma some people go through for losing family members who travel during the season.

Mr Tsibu-Yirenkyi called on all the major stakeholders in the transport sector to strive to eliminate the human errors that lead to accidents to ensure a reduction of preventable road crashes.

He also spoke against the conduct of motorists and other road users such as pedestrians, motorcycle riders and cyclists that had been identified as the causes of road accidents and crashes.

Mr Tsibu Yirenkyi said minimizing road crashes and its fatalities depended on all stakeholders and called on leaders of drivers’ unions to monitor their drivers and ensure that they abide by road safety regulations.
