Ghana's economy weak to bid for 2017 AFCON - Karl Tuffour

Ace Sports journalist Karl Tuffour says the Ghana’s economy is too weak to bid for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations hosting rights.

The country’s sports minister Mahama Ayariga announced early this week that there is huge government guarantee to bid for the rights.

But the host of Sunday Night Live on Ghana TV, believes the timing is wrong for Ghana to bid for the tournament.

“It would have been good for us as a country if the economy was good. But looking at the current situation, I don’t think I will support the bid,” he said.

“Looking at the country now, we need hospitals, schools, etc. and cannot invest in the building of stadia, training grounds and other residential facilities

“If you go to South Africa now, their economy is in shambles as a result of the 2010 World Cup. After building new stadia and training grounds for the tournament, most of them have all been left idle.

“However, the state must bear the cost of maintaining the facilities. So I will never advise the government to bid for the hosting”, he added.

CAF has announced it will be accepting bid from prospective countries until 30 September after Libya withdrew.
