Revealed: John Boye rejected Black Stars captaincy against Togo

Whereas some players are craving to captain the senior national team during competitions and matches, others will do everything to shy away from it.

One of such players is John Boye, as the player did all he could before, during, and indeed after the Ghana-Togo match to avoid the captain’s armband.

Boye, who is one of the senior players in the present Black Stars setup, prior to the Ghana-Togo game mentioned that he wasn’t the least interested in captaining the team in subsequent matches, an action he claims was not his passion.

It will be recalled that prior to the Uganda-Ghana match, the issue came up as to who will captain the Stars following the injury to captain Asamoah Gyan. The nod fell on Andre Dede Ayew.

Again, there was the need to name another captain since Dede Ayew also got injured in the Uganda game and could not feature in the Togo clash. The nod this time fell on Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu.

But sources close to the team have revealed to sportscrusader.com that Boye virtually rejected the Black Stars captain’s armband when Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu was being substituted.

“We don’t know what it is with him and the captain’s armband. He doesn’t want to go near it and even when Agyemang Badu was going off; he still refused to wear it. It took some persuasion from Badu to force the band on his arm.”

“All this while, he was calling Jonathan Mensah to come for it as he wasn’t interested,” a member of the technical team mentioned exclusively to sportscrusader.com.

“The funny thing however was that, soon after the final whistle; he quickly removed it and returned it to Agyemang-Badu.”
