Slash Black Stars bonuses further – Nyaho

A former Ghana FA boss Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has commended the ministry of sports for slashing the winning bonuses of the Black Stars from $10,000 to $5000.

Reports are rife that the four-time African champions will now be given a flat fee of $5000 regardless of the outcome of the game from the group stages of the Africa Cup of Nations coming off next January in Equatorial Guinea.

According to the firebrand, the decision is praiseworthy but wishes the bonuses were cut further.

“I think it is a fair arrangement for both the boys and [the] government,” Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe told Accra-based Joy FM.

Many have argued that the new proposal will demoralise the players, but the football administrator thinks otherwise.

“Before they start a game, they know they will be given $5000 whether they lose or win - of course, if they lose a match, then they are not going to progress further, unless when they get to the knockout stages,” he said.

He surmised: “To me, that will rather push them to play very well to progress so that they can make more money from government.

“This previous arrangements of giving them bulk money to start with and what not [was wrong]. They are playing for the nation, either they play or they should forget it. They have clubs that they play for, so even the $5000 should even be made lower.”
