Cofie draws positives from season at Chievo

Ghana midfielder Isaac Cofie says his loan stint at Chievo Verona has been eventful although he would have loved to be a regular player at the Serie A outfit.

The former Sassuolo midfielder joined the Yellow-Blues at the start of the season for a second loan term from Genoa.

Cofie had already made a mark at Chievo during his first adventure in the 2012/2013 season after making 27 appearances and scoring two goals.

His campaign at Genoa the following season ended with 17 appearances, which prompted then Chievo coach Eugenio Corini to activate another loan stint. However, Corini parted ways with the club just seven matches into the season.

“It has been a good season, because the objective of the club was to stay in the league, and that was achieved five games before the end of the season. I admit that my first time at Chievo was better, but this term I could say it was a good season. I didn’t play continuously like I did the first time, perhaps, it could be due to the change of the coach after the first seven matches,” Cofie told Goal.

The lanky midfielder is hoping the 2015/2016 season would be much better as he prepares to wrap up his loan deal this weekend when Chievo take on Fiorentina.

“I will leave for Ghana to enjoy my holidays and go back to Genoa to see what happens. I am very optimistic that next season will be better with more playing opportunities,” he said.

The 24-year-old went on to confirm that the transfer rumours over him during the winter transfer market had some iota of truth. Cofie had been linked to clubs like Sassuolo in Italy and TSG Hoffenheim in Germany.

He also admitted that the general standard of the Serie A has fallen over the years.

“It was on top when I came here first in 2009, but it’s not the same now. I think the Federation and all the stakeholders are working hard to get it back to the good old days.”

Cofie has so far made 17 appearances for Chievo this season.
