“Can’t wait for SWAG Award” -Abrefa

Derek Abrefa, nominee for the 2012 Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Table Tennis Player of the year in the male category says he has kept his ears on the ground for a long time, since January when the names for the best sportsmen and women for 2012 were mentioned in the news media, and now it has been concreted that the Awards Ceremony is scheduled for Saturday June 29 at the State House in Accra.

Speaking to yours truly, Abrefa who has won the same Award before said the SWAG Awards Night is a great day for sportsmen and women so he has been preparing and looking forward to the date.

He stressed that it is a day that sportsmen feel proud and renew their encouragement to take sports as a pastime or profession. According to the top Table Tennis star who represented Ghana at the recent All African Games in Maputo, sports has made him who he is today and was very grateful to the sports journalists who have been following his exploits, even his training and motivating him to be on top. He noted that the SWAG Awards is one event that he meets a lot of other sports personalities like footballers, boxers, athletes as well as sports administrators and coaches.

Abrefa added that most of the time he receives tons of advice from the personalities who grace the occasion so he was very glad to be named as a winner and will train harder to retain the top position in Ghana Table Tennis.

“In fact I cannot wait for the D Day, I have cherished cups, trophies and certificates, that is one of my reasons for doing sports and am very grateful to the Ghana Immigration Service for taking me and working with them has taught me many things in life, but I cannot wait for the day when my name will be called in front of big men to receive my prize. I thank my coaches, especially the head coach Owusu Ansah and those media guys like you who follow the lesser known sports for love” he said.

Abrefa also thanked the Vice President of the Ghana Table Tennis Association, Mawuko Afadzinu who is a patron of SWAG for his personal contribution to the promotion and development of the discipline in Ghana and hoped that others who love the Ping Pong Game will come on board to sponsor them.

He wished the SWAG all the best as they prepare for the ceremony on June 29, 2013.
