The #FreetheCitizens hashtag is back on top of the trends at number one.

The campaign seeks the release of protesters arrested by the police during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse and #StopGalamsey protests organised by the Democracy Hub.

Other topics on the X trends for Friday, September 27, 2024, are #StopGalamseyNow, Ghana, Cheddar, 3rd October, Delay, Sarkodie, #FixTheCountry, Papaye, Conti, Takoradi, Moesha, Katanga, and Akua Donkor.

Here’s a breakdown of why these topics are trending:

#FreetheCitizens

Another protest against illegal mining and arrested protesters by the Ghana Police Service will come off on October 3, 2024, after organisers notified the police.

The arrested protesters sought to protest against illegal mining polluting water bodies as well as demand good governance from the government.

However, the peaceful demonstration took a different turn when chaos and violence occurred between the police and protesters, leading to the arrest of the latter.

Papaye

A claim by prosecutors in court that arrested protesters were fed papaye has generated significant backlash against the Ghana Police Service.

Netizens argue that the police cannot afford to buy papaye, given the meager salaries they receive from the state.

#StopGalamseyNow

Ghanaians are calling for the immediate cessation of galamsey activities that have caused damage to several water bodies in the country.

Katanga

The Katanga fraternity of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has announced plans to embark on a naked demonstration in Accra over pollution of river bodies by activities of illegal mining.

They have also released a statement to offer their full support and commitment to the upcoming demonstration in October, 2024.

3rd October

Trending alongside #FreetheCitizens, activists have announced a three-day peaceful demonstration from October 3 to October 5, 2024, to demand the release of arrested protesters and call for an end to galamsey activities by the government.

So far, several key personalities, including influencers and school fraternities such as Katanga, Conti, and Vandals, have expressed their solidarities and plans to participate in the demonstration.

Conti

Conti, also a fraternity hall like Katanga at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has expressed its commitment and readiness to participate in the upcoming demonstration.

Sarkodie

The Ghanaian musician is trending for his silence over recent events in the country, despite allegedly being a harsh critic of the previous John Dramani Mahama administration.

Cheddar

Nana Kwame Bediako, a 2024 presidential candidate, has incurred the anger of netizens following his comments accusing the NDC of orchestrating the #StopGalamsey protests, which have led to the arrest and detention of protesters.
