The Deputy Chair of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Bossman Asare, has come under public scrutiny following the resurfacing of an old Facebook post allegedly from his page.
In the said post, published on December 12, 2016, just days after the general elections and the declaration of then NPP presidential candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as president-elect, Dr. Asare described the NPP's emphatic win and the wide margin achieved in the electoral process as a victory that had changed the country's electoral map.
According to him, the two-term cycle trend did not work for the NDC, as they failed in their bid to secure a second term in 2016 and ultimately bowed out of office.
He also highlighted how governing political parties tend to perform much better during their second term in office since the 2000 elections, a trend that did not work for the NDC.
Dr. Asare further predicted the downfall of the NDC in the 2024 elections, stating that they would struggle to be competitive against their opponents if they failed to secure enough votes in both the presidential and parliamentary elections in 2020.
In conclusion, Dr. Asare advised the NDC to elect a flagbearer from outside their traditional strongholds in the Volta, Northern, Upper East, and Upper West regions.
He suggested this strategy would help increase their chances in future elections and make the party more attractive to voters, enabling them to secure broader support.
His resurfaced post, shared by Beatrice Annan, a member of the National Democratic Congress communication team, on December 29, 2024, has generated significant discussion among critics.
Critics argue that the biases of the Electoral Commission threaten its credibility, trust, and efficiency in executing its mandate.
It is, however, unclear why the said post has resurfaced at a crucial time when the Electoral Commission has come under backlash and criticism from the public over the collation and recollation of parliamentary results and its handling of the matter.
