The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jr, has slammed Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and called for his immediate removal from office for his recent comments about the controversial National Cathedral.
According to the minister, the project was unduly criticised to the point that it deterred people from sharing their candid view on the matter.
“The National Cathedral was demonised to a point that even if there is anything proper in it, you can’t say it.
“Right from the start of the project, it was problematic. So, it is something that if you are talking about and you don’t take care, you create problems for yourself. So, let’s wait for the audit findings and the engagements with board members then we will see the way forward,” the minister said on Adom TV on April 2, 2025.
This remark has irked the veteran journalist, who has not only criticised him for his utterances, but has described him as being unfit to occupy the position of a minister under the incumbent government.
“You can’t reset this country with some kind of ministers I’m seeing today. This government partly came to power as a result of mass opposition to reckless spending, especially with regard to the National Cathedral.
“So, if you appoint a minister who, in less than 3 months, looks us in the face, and then says that they’re going to build the National Cathedral and that those who oppose it, they will face them… face who? They’re going to face those who elected him into power? That minister must be shown the exit now! He is not fit to be in office,” Pratt retorted on Pan African TV, April 6, 2025.
Meanwhile, Ahmed Ibrahim has not merely given assurances about the possible building of the National Cathedral, but he has expressed his willingness to fund it if he had the wherewithal.
When quizzed if the country needed a cathedral, he said: “… in my personal view, if I had my own money, I would build the National Cathedral for the state.”
