Over a thousand police officers are being deployed to provide protection during Tuesday’s planned demonstration by the NDC in Kumasi. Supporters of the party are gearing up for the demonstration in the Ashanti Regional capital.
The party’s Presidential candidate, Prof. John Atta Mills; General Secretary, Dr. Josiah Aryeh and other leading members of the party are expected in Kumasi on Monday. It’s Founder, former President Rawlings is also expected to join the March.
The demonstration follows a similar one held in Accra two months ago to protest what the party describes as a worsening of the ordinary man’s economic plight.
The Kumasi march has been on the drawing board since the Accra march. But it was postponed several times due to disagreements over security arrangements with police.
The Police Deputy Commissioner in Charge of Operations, Dr. K.K. Manfo, told JOY FM that the necessary arrangements have finally been made, paving the way for a peaceful demonstration in the Garden City on Tuesday.
“We will deploy uniformed and plain clothed personnel to be on the ground. We are adequately prepared to ensure that everything that should be done to make the march a success will be done”. Detectives will also be deployed.
Despite the assurance, Dr. K. K. Manfo, is hoping that the party leaders will stick to the dictates of the Public Order Act to ensure a peaceful event. He also urged them to go by the approved route and all other instructions to make the match peaceful.
