11 communities receive solar lighting

Ejura (Ash), Sept. 16, GNA 96 The government has provided 11 solar lighting systems to 11 communities in the Ejura-Sekyedumase District in the Ashanti Region in support of the Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) functional literacy programme in the district.

Dr Joshua Ayarkwa, the District Chief Executive, who announced this, mentioned the communities as Nyamebekyere, Dwenewoho, Bisiw Number one, Aframso, Bemi and Drobong.

The rest he said were Nkrampo, Frante, Kantankani, Kyenkyenkura and Babaso. The DCE, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency at the last meeting of the assembly at Ejura on Thursday, said three out of the 12 income generating activity group learners benefited from a credit facility of 16 million cedis.

He hinted that the Division under the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, distributed 17 packets of roofing sheets, 52 bicycles, 37 sewing machines and 48 ghetto blasters to facilitators. Dr Ayarkwa said a total of 4,653 learners comprising 2,220 males and 2,433 females had been trained since 2002.

The district has 22 English classes with a total number of 555 learners consisting of 250 males and 305 females, he said. The Division, the DCE said had planned to recruit 90 facilitators to handle approximately 3,000 learners for the vernacular programme and 45 facilitators for the English classes with an estimated number of 1,350 adult learners.

He said the district assembly in collaboration with the Centre for National Culture had reconstituted the defunct district cultural committee.

The DCE said queen mothers' association had been formed and sustained since 2004 in the district and that members had been sensitised in the areas of the HIV/AIDS and government developmental policies and programmes.

Dr Ayarkwa indicated that the Ejura Traditional Council in collaboration with the Centre for National Culture, were developing a five acre land into a cultural village to promote culture and tourism in the district.
