A hundred and twenty security officers are to be deployed to maintain law and order during the Ashanti Regional National Democratic Congress (NDC) elections today, the Ashanti Regional NDC Secretary, Mr. Raymond Tandoh has disclosed.
The election, which is billed for the Ahinsan Community Centre, has 69 contestants vying for the various positions in the Ashanti Region NDC.
Positions being contested for include Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer among others. Mr. Tandoh told The Chronicle on phone that security of proceedings has been entrusted in the 120 security forces.
According to him, there would be 100 police officers and 20 military personnel at the Congress to maintain law and order and that no machomen will be allowed at the venue grounds. He said campaigning ceases today.
The party scribe disclosed that tomorrow’s election is so crucial to the ruling NDC party, since they have targeted to sweep one million votes from the stronghold of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), as well as capture10 Parliamentary seats in the upcoming 2016 General Elections.
Mr. Tandoh stated that as keen as the election is, it must be seen as a family contest and should not be considered as a ‘fight’ among the aspirants.
He urged supporters and delegates to remain calm as they go about polling for candidates of their choice.
