The Eastern Regional Police Command has arrested fourteen people in connection with Monday’s attack on a Police station at Somanya in the region.

Angry residents of Somanya in the Eastern Region vandalized the Police Station in the area, setting free four rioters in Police cells on Monday afternoon.

It took the timely intervention of a Military and police reinforcement team who fired warning shots to restore law and order.

Tension has been mounting in Somanya after Dendenden, a supposed ring leader reported to have masterminded last Friday’s demonstration was arrested and sent to the Eastern Regional Police Headquarters.

Two people were injured in the stand off between the Police and residents Monday.

The youth of the Krobo town earlier went on rampage and damaged a vehicle belonging to the Police.

The Eastern Regional Police PRO, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh briefing the media on the development in the area said , about 14 persons are currently being held by the command in connection with the riots.

“We have arrested 14 people and all of them are in our custody in Koforidua. First suspect was arrested in the morning. It was based on his arrest that the people mobilized and went and vandalized the Police Station and destroyed the police vehicle.

The 13 were just brought in to Koforidua and as we speak they are in our lawful custody and assisting us in investigation of a number of offenses that were perpetrated including rioting, causing damage, aiding the escape of prisoners from lawful custody and causing unlawful harm.

Some persons have sustained some injuries, property belonging to the state at the Police station and some Police vehicle was also destroyed and they are assisting us in investigations.”
