A 16 year old hermaphrodite has been successfully operated upon free upon of charge in the Upper West Region, by a team of Surgeons from the University of Development Studies (UDS) and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Medical Schools.

It took the team of experts three (3) hours to effect the corrective surgery in an exercise that formed part of the KNUST Medical School’s 40th anniversary.

The boy, who had been raised up as a male is reported to have had a large protruding stomach and highly inflated breast even though he looked a boy.

Dr Kweku Addai Arhin, an Urologist who operated on the boy’s case disclosed that the boy was first asked what his preferred sex was, and he insisted he wanted to be a male.

He explained further that it is easier for someone to be made a female than a male, because the “you need a very good length of penis”.

“Usually you’ll have to wait for the child to grow and decide what sex he wants to be. This child had been named a boy from the beginning and so you could see he has grown with that psychological upbringing that he is a boy, the problem would have been if we had to convert this boy now into a girl. We could still do that, it would have been a high technique surgery; one has to have the skill to perform such work”.

Some 379 persons benefited from various treatment provided by 37 doctors free of charge.

Health professionals spent five days working in the Upper West region. It formed part of a medical outreach programme
