The ninth general election of Ghana's Fourth Republic will take place on Saturday, December 7, 2024.

The 2024 elections mark a significant moment in Ghana's democratic history as they signal the end of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's tenure. He will be bowing out as the third president under the Fourth Republic to serve two terms, and it will also mark the end of Ghana's first-ever hung Parliament.

The election pits a former president against a sitting vice president in a battle that could see the NPP make history as the first party since 1992 to govern the country for three consecutive terms, should they win it again.

As Ghanaians gear up for another election that will shape the country's direction for the next four years, GhanaWeb brings you the numbers behind the polls on Saturday.

Voter Population

According to data from the Electoral Commission, Ghana's voter population is 18,774,159. This number marks a significant increase from the 2020 election, which had 17,027,941 people registered to vote.

Of the 18.8 million voters, 459,291 represent 4% of the voter population. 48% of the voters are male, while the female population makes up 52%.

The role of the youth in the elections will be significant as they make up 55% of the voter population.

Polling Station Numbers

A total of 40,976 polling centres will be used for the 2024 elections, with 328 already used for the Special Voting exercises that took place on Monday, December 2, and Thursday, December 5, 2024.

Candidate Numbers

According to data published by CODEO, the largest CSO in elections, the 2024 elections will feature 13 presidential candidates and 801 parliamentary candidates vying for the 276 seats.

Of the 13 presidential candidates, four are independent, while nine represent political parties. This means that the elections will have nine political parties contesting.

In the parliamentary elections, 111 candidates are contesting as independents.

Last Two Elections Numbers

The 2016 elections, which saw the NPP win with the largest margin ever recorded in any election under the Fourth Republic, had 15,712,505 voters with a voter turnout of 69.6%.

The numbers increased in the 2020 elections, with a voter population of 17,027,941 and a turnout rate of 79.0%.
