A total of 201 persons were killed in 825 road accidents in the Central Region from January to November 2018, provisional figures from the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) has shown.

Additional 1,321 persons sustained various degrees of injuries in the accidents that involved some 572 commercial and 253 private vehicles.

The statistics were made available Wednesday at the launch of Christmas road safety campaign in Cape Coast by the NRSC. The campaign is dubbed “Ekwanso Dwodwoo, Meye M’afemu Dzi”.

The Central Regional Manager of NRSC, Linda Afotey Annan, described the crashes as worrying, stating, “this is a worrying issue [but] this situation can really be reversible if each one of us go by the theme we have chosen for this season”.

She said road safety is a shared responsibility hence urged drivers, passengers and pedestrians to play their part in reducing road crashes in the country, especially during the yuletide.

As part of the campaign which will run until January 2019 ending, she said a series of outreach events will be held across the region to create awareness

Deputy Regional Mananager of the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Authority, Engene Tawiah observed a lot of major accidents that happen on highways are caused by drivers.

He noted 70 percent of accidents are attributable to drivers’ errors.
