Former Ashanti Regional Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Brogya Genfi has described as described utterances made by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited , Maxwell Kofi Jumah and Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Serebour Quaicoe as borne out of ignorance.

He wants the two pardoned from further verbal attacks after they made statements he observed are in variation with entrenched provisions in the 1992 constitution.

Dr. Serebour Quaicoe had earlier stated that there will be no elections in 2020 if plans for the new register fails.

“We have up to the end of June to compile the new register…the new register is important if only we want to have an election, so without the new register no elections”, he added.

Mr Kofi Jumah on the other hand said the 2020 elections should be cancelled for the country to focus on the coronavirus fight.

“For me I think we shouldn’t vote this year. As we have managed the Coronavirus very well, there’s the need to also move to neighbouring countries to help them in their fight so that we can be safe after we’re done handling ours. This is because if they’re not safe, it means we are also not safe,” he told the host of Accra FM Morning show.

But the former NDC executive sought to educate them on the provisions in the constitution and why their stance are not consonance with the constitution.

“The day for Presidential Elections in Ghana is provided at Article 63 under the Executive in Chapter 8 of the 1992 Constitution. All provisions under this Chapter are entrenched, i.e. can only be amended through referendum…

However, the day for Parliamentary Elections which is at Article 113 of the 1992 Constitution is not entrenched and can be amended by Parliament. But, remember all the non-entrenched provisions of the Constitution is amended only by a two-thirds majority of Parliament.

So please stop insulting Dr. Serebour of the Electoral Commission and my Uncle Kofi Jumah …they need education on these provisions not insults”
