The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has advised journalists to be mindful of their personal safety in the run-up to the December elections.

Elections, according to GJA President Affail Monney, are usually characterised by violence, thus, the need for journalists to take their safety seriously.

Speaking at a commemorative event to mark the one-year anniversary of the cold-blooded murder of Tiger Eye PI journalist, Ahmed Hussein-Suale, the GJA President said the investigative journalist’s death has adversely affected the reputation of the country.

“We wish to use this moment of commemoration to sound a caution to all journalists to sharpen their sense of security, especially in this election year, and avoid areas and practices which can imperil their lives or danger their safety. The GJA implores the security agencies to make the security of journalists a topmost priority this year and beyond,” Mr Affail Monney said.

The Public Relations Officer of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), ASP Juliana Obeng, who was at the event, said investigations are well-advanced concerning the murder but she cannot share the details with the public at the moment.

Hussein-Suale was gruesomely murdered around his home at Madina in Accra by unknown assassins on 16 January 2019.
