The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has reaffirmed the Ghana Police Service's commitment to maintaining peace, security, and order throughout the election period, the post-election phase, and beyond.

Speaking at the signing of the 2024 Peace Pact on Thursday, November 28, 2024, Dr. Dampare emphasised the police's dedication to its constitutional mandate and called on all stakeholders to prioritise the nation's peace.

"We are committed to ensuring that we take our constitutional mandate seriously, ensuring peace, security, law, and order during the election period, the post-election period, and beyond," he noted.

The IGP assured the public that the police would not only uphold their responsibilities but also avoid being a source of disturbances during the elections.

"And with this commitment, we want to let you know that we will not be the source or allow ourselves to be the source of any disturbances that would corrupt the peace that we cherish so much and we also urge all the stakeholders to also play their part so that they are not also the source or allow themselves to the source of anything that disturbs the peace of this country," he explained.

Dr. Dampare also pointed out that the current leaders must ensure a peaceful nation for future generations.

"We are holding this nation in trust for the next generation, as our forebears did for us. We cannot disappoint them or the youth. The pledge we make is not mere words; it is intentional and purposeful," he explained.

The IGP also disclosed that a comprehensive analysis was conducted by the Police Service to understand why elections in Ghana are often accompanied by tensions and violence.

He added that key findings included the failure to mainstream election security as a continuous process.

To address this, he stated that the police have established a permanent department dedicated to election security, ensuring it becomes an integral part of policing in Ghana.

"We have decided to mainstream election security with the establishment of a permanent department for the purposes of managing elections in this country and by this, I mean all elections, even including school and church elections.

"So, that at the end of the day, election security becomes part of policing and security in this country, and this is what we have been able to achieve. In addition to that, we realised that there was no blueprint for looking at election security holistically and strategically beyond one election. So, we decided to develop a blueprint that will take care of elections for the next 30 years," he noted.
