The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has reaffirmed the party's resolve to secure an 85% share of the total votes cast in the Ashanti region.

He holds the view that the happenings of the 2008 elections cannot be replicated in 2024 as the two elections do not have the same dynamics.

“In 2008, when the NPP had finished its eight-year term and was looking to break the 8, there was a lot of despondency, but now the narrative is different because the government is performing and meeting the expectations of the people. This gives us confidence that breaking the 8 is possible this time around,” Chairman Wontumi told host of GhanaAkoma on Akoma FM, Sir John, as reported by 3news.com.

To Wontumi, the opposition National Democratic Congress cannot be an option for the people of the Ashanti Region.

“Mahama has nothing good to offer this region; during his time he introduced Capitation under the NHIS, and this created a lot of problems for the people; we still remember; he neglected the people of the Ashanti region,” he added.

Chairman Wontumi also expressed confidence in the current road constructions in the Ashanti area, saying it will provide the ruling party a significant edge over the opposition.

Since the party's founding in 1992, the ruling NPP has not yet achieved a 77% approval rating in its own stronghold.

The party achieved its greatest results in the elections of 2004 and 2016, both with 76% vote cast.

The party was led by candidate John Agyekum Kufour to victory in 2004, while current president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo did the same in the 2016 elections.
