22 rusticated UCC students reinstated, get GH¢10k each

Before Friday Before Friday

The 22 students of the Atlantic Hall of the University of Cape Coast rusticated in May for a student brawl during their hall week celebration have been reinstated.

A Cape Coast High Court on Friday ruled in favour of the 22 students.

They are to be given GH¢10,000 each as costs.

The brawl on campus involved students of Commonwealth Hall from the University of Ghana – nicknamed Vandals – and University Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology – nicknamed Katanga. It left three students seriously injured.

Before Friday’s ruling, the students had secured an ex-parte injunction to write their end-of-semester exams.

All but Enock Abeiku Bart-Plange Tawiah were rusticated for two semesters.

Master Bart-Plange Tawiah was rusticated for four semesters as he was cited for the “singular act… to aid the Vandals to enter Oguaa Hall”.

“His act has caused Destruction of University Property contrary to Article 46 (g) of the Students’ Handbook,” the University authorities said in their statement outline the procedure they followed in meting out the punishment.

But lawyer for the students, Patrick Justice Ennin contested the procedure followed, in court, stressing it was not in line with the University’s regulations.

He said they even demanded a compensation of GH¢100,000 each for the students.
