Three illegal miners, popularly known as galamsey operators, have been remanded in prison custody by Bekwai Circuit Court.

The three were arrested by members of the Amansie Central District Security Council led by the Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Kwame Asamoah Boateng.

The suspects who were arrested at various sites were using the machine known by the local people as ‘tototo’ on one of their water bodies.

The three who were the first to be arraigned before the court will reappear today, while their two other colleagues who are still cooling off in police cells would be arraigned later this week.

Even though the ban on small-scale and illegal mining this year was loud, forcing several companies off their concessions, some recalcitrant one’s are reportedly perpetrating the illegality.

What has made the case of these three worse was the fact that they were caught mining on a water body, which both government and the citizenry have condemned because of its hazardous nature.

In an interview, the DCE said the suspects have been operating in the night despite the directive from His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to halt galamsey operations in the country.

He thus pledged to champion the course of the president to clamp down all galamsey operators in the area.

He, however, pleaded with the people in the area to alert the security with every information that bothers on the illegality in the district.
