The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has announced the setting up of a three-member committee to probe into the circumstances that led into the rioting by students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), in October,2018.
The committee will be chaired by retired Supreme court Judge, Justice Rose Owusu and scheduled to be inaugurated by next week, Otumfuo has disclosed.
The demonstration by the students led to the destruction of properties estimated at over GHS1.6 million.
The Asantehene who doubles as the Chancellor of the KNUST made this known during a Special Congregation held at the KNUST on Saturday, February 2, 2019 for post graduate students.
The setting up of the Committee was first announced in November last year, by Otumfuo to carry out a thorough and transparent inquiry into the happenings that led to the closure of the University.
“A full and transparent inquiry must be set up into all the circumstances leading to the day of horrors. As Chancellor of the University and in line with the understanding by which government mandated me to manage this process, I should with appropriate consultation appoint a five-man committee to be headed by a Judge to probe both the remote and immediate causes, and the lessons to be learnt thereof,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu said.
