4 biggest disasters that occurred in the history of Ghana

Four years ago, Ghana was thrown into a state of mourning after people lost their lives in a flood disaster at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.

On June 3, 2015, Ghanaians woke up to hear of incident in which over 150 people got burnt to death after a heavy downpour.

YEN.com.gh brings to you four heart-breaking disasters which took Ghana by storm:

1. The stadium disaster (May 9, 2001):

May 9, 2001 has gone down into the history books of Ghana as the biggest stadium disaster that ever happened.

During a match between arch rivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko, a fight broke leading to the disaster.

Over 100 soccer fans died as a result of a stampede and tear gas after fans tried to escape for their lives.

In addition to the stampede, tear gas fired into the crowd so as to stop them from fighting, but this rather led to deaths.

Till today, the May 9 disaster is commemorated so as to sensitize soccer fans not to engage in such brawls again.

2. Circle flood disaster (June 3, 2015):

When heavy rains came pouring on the night of June 2, 2019, little did anyone know that the next day was going to bring the biggest flood disaster.

From the dawn of June 3, 2015, news began trooping in about Ghanaians who got burnt after a fuel station exploded at Circle in the heart of Accra.

The disaster led to over 150 people dying as most of them suffered burns from the fire that followed the explosion.

3. Kintampo Waterfall disaster (March 19, 2017):

It was a sad moment for Ghana as students of Wenchi Senior High School died while on excursion at the Kintampo Waterfall.

The disaster occurred after a number trees came tumbling down while the students were bathing in the water.

Reports revealed that 20 people died as a result of the incident; 17 died on the spot with the 3 others losing their lives at the hospital. It was indeed a sad moment for Ghana and it led to the renovation of the Kintampo Waterfall.

4. Kintampo road accident (March 22, 2019):

One gory accident that will go down the history books of Ghana is the crash that occurred on the Kintampo-Techiman road.

On March 22, 2019, two buses collided on the Kintampo-Techiman road leading to the death of 57 passengers.

Police said the fatal accident happened around 2 am at a town called Ampoma in the Bono East Region.

Most of those killed were commuters from Garu-Tempane heading towards Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

Even though 53 people survived the accident, it was indeed a deadly, and it brought sadness to Ghana.
