4 gang-rape banker

A labourer and three others, who allegedly gang-raped a banker and robbed her off her belongings at gunpoint, have been remanded into custody, after being arraigned before an Accra Circuit court and charged with robbery and rape on Wednesday.

The accused persons, Usiff Abdulraman; labourer, Abdulai Alui; trader, Agyeman Badu; unemployed, and Kwasi Tawiah alias Taller; driver, together with their accomplices, Demio, Noah and Papa, all at large, are alleged to have raped the victim at gunpoint in turns, through her vagina and anus, at the home of the complainant, after their robbery escapade.

The accused persons allegedly managed to make away with the complainant’s six mobile phones, quantity of wax prints, wedding ring, Sony digital camera, ignition key to her Honda CRV 4X4 car, and cash of GH¢400.

They are standing trial before the court, presided over by Mr. Eric Kyei Baffour, on charges of conspiracy to commit crime, robbery and rape, and have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The court, therefore, refused them bail, and remanded them into custody to reappear on October 21, 2011.

The facts of the case indicate that on August 7, 2011, at about 2:30.a.m. whilst the complainant and her family were fast asleep, the accused persons and their accomplices, namely Demio, Noah and Papa, who are currently at large, invaded the house.

According to the Prosecutor, ASP Reindolf Agyemang, the accused persons were armed with guns, sticks, hacksaw blade and a big crow bar and surrounded the house of the complainant, forced the glass door leading to the living room open with the crow bar, and at gunpoint ransacked every room of the five-bedroom self-contained house. A report was made to the Adenta Police for investigation at about 7:20 a.m. the same day.

The prosecutor told the court “On September 8th, 2011, the police had a tip off that the third accused person was among a group of armed robbers who had been robbing and raping innocent citizens of Oyarifa, Adenta, and its environs, and was arrested,” the prosecutor noted.

The prosecutor intimated that the accused person admitted the offence during interrogation and when a search was conducted at his residence at Glife, one pump action gun was found. He later led the police to arrest the first and second accused persons, while the fourth accused person was later arrested from his hideout upon a tip-off.

“The fourth accused person was identified by the complainant as one of the suspects who robbed the house,” the prosecutor said.

“In their caution statement, they admitted the offences and mentioned Demio, Noah and Papa as their accomplices,” ASP Agyemang stressed.
