There are clear indications that Members of the Public are highly supportive of the call by the Minority in Parliament for the refund of 41 Million Cedis donated by a Kumasi-based farmer towards the renovation of the President JA Kufuor’s private residence. Others however think that that the NDC call by the National Democratic Congress is misplaced because of the experiences of the past.
The NDC’s arguement is that the donation by the farmer, Kwame Marfo, amounts to bribery since it could give him un-due influence over the President.
The minority group asked the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice-CHRAJ to reprimand the former works and Housing Minister, Kwamena Bartels for allegedly facilitating the controversial donation and also investigate the cost involved in the renovation works on the Presidents Airport Residential Area home to establish the true source of the money used in funding the project.
They are also demanding that the the amount established by an audit should to be surcharged to the Presidents account with periodic deductions from his salary in the next four years.
Making reference to the various conflicting statements from Government Ministers on the renovation works, the minority maintains that an early probe will be most appropriate.
Members of the public who agree with the position of the minority say, the NPP must be seen to be living up to the Policy of zero tolerance for corruption.
Those against the NDC stand maintain that members of the NDC have no moral grounds to make such requests since they are known to have received various kinds of gifts and favours from people.
