415 former child Labourers assisted

Kade, Oct. 28, GNA - Four hundred and fifteen children withdrawn from worst forms of child labour and placed in schools in the Kwaebibirem District have been given school kits of uniforms, foot wear, bags and exercise books.

Three hundred and eleven of the children were sponsored by Ghana Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) and 104 under the National Programme for the Elimination of Child Labour in cocoa (NPECL), together with the Kwaebibirem District Assembly. In all the children received a total of 415 school uniforms, 104 shoes and sandals, 104 school bags and six exercise books per child. Mr Yaw Yiadom-Boakye, Kwaebibirem District Chief Executive, told the Assembly that, under the programme, 27 other children who have past school going age, but chose to acquire vocational skills were being assisted to learn a vocation.

He said they had been provided with 15 sewing machines, 10 driers, one welding machine and accessories, and a set of masonry tools.
