Lawyer and social media influencer Ama Governor, also known as Elorm Ababio, has expressed her distress after being held in police custody for 48 hours without food or water.

The influencer, along with 41 other protesters, were arrested during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration over the weekend.

The protest, organized by Democracy Hub, aimed to address the illegal mining crisis (galamsey) in Ghana but escalated into violent clashes at the 37 Intersection in Accra on Sunday, September 22, 2024.

Appearing at the Accra court on September 24, 2024, in handcuffs, Ama Governor spoke emotionally to the press, detailing the harsh conditions she has endured since her arrest.

"I want to go, so they grant us bail, 48 hours, no food, no water," she cried out.

The #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest, which began as a peaceful demonstration against illegal mining, resulted in the arrest of 42 demonstrators.

The police have accused the protesters of obstructing traffic, damaging police property, and attacking officers.

In a statement released late Sunday, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs for the Ghana Police Service, stated that all arrested individuals, including some of the protest leaders, would face the law.

Meanwhile, the court has denied bail to Ama Governor and the other protesters. They are expected to reappear before the court on October 8, 2024, where their legal fate will be decided.

The 26-year-old lawyer and influencer, who was called to the Ghana Bar in May 2024, has been a vocal advocate for social justice and environmental causes.
