Charlotte Osei’s reign as chairperson of the Electoral Commission has finally ended. The 49-year-old was relieved of her duties on Thursday evening.
Madam Osei has been under the spotlight for many months, following allegations of financial malfeasance labeled against her.
The EC boss has also been on bad terms with her two deputies, Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwah, with the trio accusing each other of mismanagement of the Commission’s funds.
The sacking of Madam Osei is bound to make headlines in the next few weeks, especially with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) not enthused by President Akufo-Addo’s decision.
Below are five things you may not have known about Madam Charlotte Osei.
1. She’s Ghana’s first female to serve as EC boss
Charlotte Osei made history when she was appointed chairperson of the Electoral Commission by becoming the first ever female to occupy the position since Ghana’s Independence.
The embattled EC was appointed by former president John Mahama ahead of the 2016 elections following the retirement of Kwadwo Afari-Gyan.
2. She also served as Chairperson for NCCE
Before Charlotte Osei’s appointment as EC she used to serve as chairperson for the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE).
She served as NCCE boss from 2011 to 2015 before being appointed as EC boss by the erstwhile Mahama administration.
