Some 500 supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Afigya Kwabre South constituency of the Ashanti Region have reportedly switched allegiance to the opposition National Democratic Party (NDP).
This was revealed to Accra News on Sunday April 17, 2016 by Peter Nandema, a former branch chairman of the NDC at Atimatim, also in the constituency.
Mr Nandema told Akua Agyeiwaa that they had resorted to the action following unheeded calls for the removal of the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the area, Oppong Kyekyeku.
He said the DCE had failed to accord party members the due respect, as he had refused, on several occasions, to meet them to listen to their grievances.
Mr Nandema continued that supporters had petitioned the regional and national executives of the party to push the president to remove Mr Oppong Kyekyeku, but to no avail, hence their decision to join the National Democratic Party (NDP).
The NDP has former first lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings its most prominent member. She was the party’s 2012 flagbearer following her resignation from the NDC, a party founded by her husband and former President Jerry John Rawlings.
