62-year-old farmer remanded for defiling granddaughter

Accra, Feb. 10, GNA - Thomas Ampem Adjei, 62, a farmer of Mpaaaso in Kumasi, who allegedly defiled his seven-year old granddaughter, was on Friday remanded into prison custody by an Accra Fast Track High Court.

Adjei, whose plea was not taken by the Court presided over by Mr Justice Emmanuel K. Ayebi is expected to reappear on February 24. When the case was called, Ms Cynthia Lamptey, Principal State Attorney prayed the court to remand Adjei to enable them to study the docket and present it formally to the Court.

The victim, who now passed stool through her genitals, is said to have undergone two surgical operations and is awaiting another. Adjei was brought from Kumasi to Accra at the request of the Attorney-General.

The case of Prosecution is that the victim's father Kwabena Amankwah between 2003 and 2004 came for the victim and sent her to the accused.

On one occasion her senior sister paid them a visit during which she found the victim had been left in the care of one Mr Opoku. The woman found out that the victim was seriously sick with offensive liquid oozing from her genitals and informed a relative, who requested that the victim be brought to Accra.

On their arrival, the victim was sent to a clinic where she was referred to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

During medical examination, a Consultant Paediatrician concluded that the victim, who passed stool through her genital, had been defiled. The Paediatrician wrote a note to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit of the Police Service to investigate and in an interview with the victim she mentioned Adjei as the one who defiled her.
