Seven galamseyers have been confirmed dead after an illegal small-scale mining pit in which they worked collapsed on them in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region, according to Adom News correspondent Akwasi Dwamena cited by myjoyonline.com.

The report added that 17 others remain trapped under the debris, facing diminishing hopes of rescue. Local residents have stepped forward, employing all available means to aid in the rescue efforts.

However, only two of the trapped miners had been successfully rescued, albeit with injuries. Akwasi Dwamena added that the lifeless bodies of the seven deceased miners were laid out in the open and their remains are covered with bushes.

The Ghanaian government's ongoing battle against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, continues to intensify as the devastating impact on water bodies persists. Despite employing numerous strategies to clamp down on these illicit operations, the government's efforts have yet to yield the desired results, leaving the nation's water resources at risk.
