7 high profile strikes that have rocked Akufo-Addo's govt in 2024

There have been a series of high-profile strikes that have rocked the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led government in 2024.

From Organized Labour protesting against the sale of a 60% stake in 4 SSNIT hotels to civil servants demanding better working conditions, these strike actions have impacted various sectors of the economy.

The following are the 7 high profile strike actions that have happened in 2024 so far;

1. Organised Labour;

10 labour unions consisting of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), and the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU), Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), the Judicial Service STAFF Association of Ghana (JUSAG) and the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives’ Association (GRNMA) and General Transport, Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union are embarking on a nationwide strike, effective July 15, to protest the intended sale of 60 percent shares in 4 SSNIT Hotels to Rock City Hotel, and the dissolution of SSNIT’s management board.

2. CLOGSAG;

The Civil and Local Government Staff Association declared a nationwide strike on July 3, following the government’s failure to implement a new salary structure for its members.

3. NIA;

Unionized members of the National Identification Authority embarked on a strike on June 10 over poor working conditions.

The union demanded better working conditions for its members.

4. CETAG;

On June 14, the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana embarked on a strike, protesting the government’s delay in implementing negotiated service conditions.

5. NSS;

National Service Personnel, demanding payment of overdue allowances, announced their decision to embark on a strike on July 3rd.

6. TEWU

The Tertiary Education Workers Union embarked on a 2 weeks strike which commenced on February 1 over non-payment of their vehicle maintenance allowances and other conditions of service.

7. Teacher Unions;

Members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT-Gh) laid down their working tools following the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service’s delay in addressing their conditions of service despite negotiations, government’s inability to complete the distribution of laptops to all teachers, constant changes of school calendar without recourse to negotiation with the respective teacher unions as well as the blockage of teacher’s salaries by the OSP.

Their strike started on March 20, 2024.
