80-year-old man nabbed for armed robbery

An 80-year-old man, Alhaji Buba Osmanu, a Bukinabe, has been arrested in connection with a highway robbery at Dwamena near Tiase in the Eastern Region.

Ali Bube, 28; a Nigerian, Amadu Amaga, 30 and Omaro Abudulai, 30, both Fulanis and Bube Weti, 22 Beninois, were said to have robbed traders returning from Akate market, of total amount of GH¢9,500 on the Forifori to Tiase road after blocking the road with logs.

The Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kwabena Gyamera-Yeboah, who briefed the Times, said on January 18, this year at around 7:00p.m, four armed men in masks blocked the Forifori road at Tiase, attacked the traders and robbed them of the amount and other possessions.

He said upon a tip off, a patrol team was dispatched to arrest the armed men, but on seeing the team, they escaped into the bush.

The police gave them a hot chase in the bush and succeeded in arresting Ali Bube in whose possession was found a locally manufactured shot gun and four live cartridges.

The others sought refuge in the house of Alhaji Osumanu at Donkorkrom, but last Friday, the police acting on different information, arrested the old man together with the other four.

They have been detained at the Police Headquarters in Koforidua for further investigations, DCOP Gyamera-Yeboah said.
