9th Parliament Speaker: Alban Bagbin accepts Mahama’s endorsement

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has expressed his profound gratitude to President-Elect John Dramani Mahama for endorsing him for re-election as Speaker of the 9th Parliament.

In a statement issued on January 5, 2024, President-Elect Mahama officially endorsed Alban Bagbin as the Speaker for the 9th Parliament, following consultations and a mutual agreement between the National Executive and Parliamentary Leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The statement, signed by the Spokesperson of the Transition Team, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, praised Bagbin's significant contributions and extensive experience in managing parliamentary affairs.

It also emphasised his unwavering dedication to public service.

In response to the endorsement, Alban Bagbin has expressed his gratitude to the NDC for their intention to reinstate him in his role as Speaker.

In a statement issued on January 5, 2025, the Speaker said, "I sincerely thank the President-elect, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, for the trust and confidence he has placed in me, in consultation with the NDC National Executives and Parliamentary Leadership, by nominating me to be elected Speaker of the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, this is an immense honour and a responsibility I do not take lightly."

The Speaker further reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the values of integrity, transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness during his tenure.

"As Speaker of the Ninth Parliament, I will ensure that the House operates with the highest standards of integrity, transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness," he stated. "I will, now more than ever, fully dedicate myself to the task ahead, working to strengthen our democratic institutions and ensuring that Parliament remains a responsive and effective institution that meets the needs and aspirations of the people,” he added.
