Prof Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua, Associate Professor at the School of Law, University of Ghana, has lauded the Attorney General for pursuing the alleged case of malfeasance by a former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene.
He, however, noted that the exercise which is meant to hold public officers accountable, must equally include politically-exposed persons.
“I think that the AG acted rightly. I think that instead of a section of the public chastising him for putting out details of the case, he should rather be applauded for it.
“It shows transparency on the part of the Attorney General and it is particularly important that the cases feature politically-exposed persons, otherwise it will appear to be witch hunting,” he said on ‘PM Express’ on March, 24, 2025.
Reacting to the assertion by critics that the Dr Ayine revealed too much details on the case, he stressed that it was necessary for a healthy democracy.
“I don’t see anything wrong with what the Attorney General did. I think that the Attorney General is being transparent in conducting his duties.
“If he had failed to put out this information, the same critics who have come out to say that he is being prejudicial would mark the same process as being opaque and demanded for more details. So, instead of the criticisms, I think he should rather be applauded,” he stated.
Prof Appiagyei-Atua’s statements follows a press release by the legal team of the embattled NSB boss on March 24, 2025, stating that their client had not been fairly treated by the Attorney General.
In the statement, the legal firm: Zoe, Akyea & Co, described the AG’s comments as a “prejudicial press engagement.”
They argued that his comments amounted to a public conviction, while investigations by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) were still ongoing.
“The power to investigate any Ghanaian for alleged criminal offenses has no party colours. It is a painstaking exercise to ensure that the rule of law is observed and that persons with material stakes are not unfairly targeted by those who wield the powers of the state,” portions of the statement said.
