AIDS kills 169 in Eastern region

HIV/AIDS killed as many as 167 people at the Koforidua Government Hospital last year, authorities of the facility have revealed.

According to the management of the facility, the deadly virus claimed more lives than any other disease in the past year.

HIV beat diseases such stroke which held the record of claiming the most lives at the facility. Stroke however, came second claiming 163 lives in 2015.

The Medical Director at the regional hospital, Dr. Kwame Anim Boamah made the revelation in an interview with the media Friday.

Other leading causes of deaths recorded are pneumonia ,septicemia, heart disease, Chronic liver cirrhosis, prematurity, kidney diseases, birth asphysia and anaemia.

Meanwhile, malaria and hypertension recorded the highest cause of admission with 1002 and 709 cases respectively whiles 639 abortion cases were recorded.

During the year under review, government assisted renovation and re-tooling of the main theater with theater table and lights, diathemy machines, anesthetic machine and monitors, and surgical instruments.

Also, a six-bed facility has been installed at the intensive care unit, new digital x-ray and mammography machines among many others have all been installed.
